The Troyer Vertical Gourd is a durable alternative to natural gourds, offering Purple Martins a spacious nesting cavity while giving landlords a long-lasting, easy-care housing option.
The gourd is made from UV-inhibited, high-density polyethylene plastic that won't rot, peel, split, or crack like natural gourds can. Its white, opaque construction reflects sunlight and is designed for years of outdoor use with very little maintenance.
Designed for Purple Martins
The Troyer Vertical Gourd combines several features designed to make it comfortable and practical home for Purple Martins:
- Crescent SREH entrance helps deter European Starlings while providing a martin-friendly entrance.
- Wing-entrapment guard is molded into the Crescent entrance.
- Super-wide porch gives martins plenty of room at the entrance.
- Traction tread provides additional footing for birds entering and leaving the gourd.
- 13-inch overall length provides a deep nesting cavity and may help reduce the risk of owl predation.
- Molded-in collar makes attaching the Troyer Tunnel simple.
- Pre-drilled 3/8-inch hanging hole makes the gourd easy to install.
Important: How the Vertical Gourd Hangs
- Although it's called the Troyer Vertical Gourd, it hangs from a horizontal-style gourd mounting/hanging arm.
- The mounting arm is inserted through the neck of the gourd from back to front. The gourd can be used on compatible Troyer gourd racks or hung beneath an existing Purple Martin house using the appropriate mounting hardware.
Built for Years of Outdoor Use
- Troyer Gourds are blow-molded from white, opaque, high density polyethylene with UV inhibitors added to the plastic. This durable construction is designed to withstand outdoor conditions with the rot, peeling, splitting, or cracking associated with natural gourds.
- The Troyer Tunnel is also made from UV-inhibited plastic.
- When the season is over, the gourd can simply be cleaned and prepared for the next season.

Troyer Vertical Gourd is Compatible With:
- Pine Needles: Every plastic gourd should have a bed of pine needles placed inside before the martins arrive and used for nest changes.
- Door Shields: Slips over the face of the tunnel entrance blocking the entrance keeping out unwanted birds.
- Crescent Door Plug: Blocks the Crescent entrance keeping out unwanted birds. Note: Use either Door Shields or Crescent Hole Plugs.
- Troyer's Vented Caps: Helps to vent the gourd. Replace with your original cap once the young are at least 7 days of age.
- Troyer-Haskell Tunnel Trap: Capture House Sparrows inside the nesting gourd.
