Troyer's Sparrow-Resistant Bluebird House combines Western red cedar construction with a slotted entrance and removable cedar nest tray to create a nesting cavity that is less attractive to House Sparrows while remaining suitable for Bluebirds.
The house features a durable green Poly-Tuff roof, an easy-opening front for nest checks and cleaning, and included mounting hardware for use with our Bluebird Aluminum Mounting Post.
What Makes This Bluebird House Sparrow-Resistant?
Sparrow-resistant does not mean sparrow-proof. House Sparrows may still enter the house and may even bring nesting material inside. The difference is in the design features that help make this nesting cavity less desirable to House Sparrows while remaining suitable for Bluebirds.
The slotted entrance allows more sunlight into the nesting cavity. House Sparrows generally prefer larger, darker nesting spaces, so the additional light helps discourage them from choosing the house.
The removable cedar nest tray also reduces the usable interior cavity space, giving House Sparrows less room to build the large grass-filled nests they prefer.
The wider slotted entrance provides another important benefit. Unlike a small round entrance that can be more easily controlled by an aggressive male House Sparrow, the wider opening gives a female Bluebird more opportunity to escape from the nesting cavity.
Together, these features are designed to discourage House Sparrows — not guarantee that they will never enter — while providing Bluebirds with a practical nesting site.
