Question

Q: We purchased this item a few weeks ago. We have tried it in different locations, but have not had any luck capturing sparrows. Suggestions would be welcomed.

Q: The description confuses me. It states that the mechanism has a cage over teeter totter to prevent sparrows ... but isn't that how the trap works? I like the design and was ready to order but that oart of description was confusing. I need a trap as soon as possible because I am expecting purple martins any day!

Q: Question about the box that is inside the trap. I understand the HOSPS like to got in there for shelter. I assume that no native bird would go into the box if there are HOSPS in there, is that right? What about when the trap is empty? Might a native go into the box? My concern is that I might catch a native and not realize it, because he has gone into the box. Also, how do you get the HOSPS out of the box?

Patience is the single most important part when using a bait trap of any kind. Placement near bushes, buildings, anyplace you notice the sparrow hanging out. Have a barn they can get into, place near the grain. Have chicken, place near them. Make a little platform for the trap to sit on. This is easily accomplished by using a cement block (or like) with a plywood board, slightly larger than trap, placed on top of the cement blocks. Bait this by placing bread and millet or other items house sparrows love. Once you see the sparrows feeding off the board, place the trap on to the platform. Place a line of grain in the board and on the bait platform. Again patience is required. You may have better luck when there is snow or its cold as they will be looking for food. Once you have your first sparrow it will go much better and remember to keep food inside the chamber to keep the birds alive, and if you have trapped birds dont leave them out overnight, especially if its cold it could kill them and decoys draw the other birds in. Sparrow lands on porch. Sees bait. Steps into the teeter-totter mechanism which goes down, startled sparrow rushes into the cage.

The teeter-totter is covered by a wire cage. This protects the teeter-totter from sparrows sitting on it. The "cage" is shipped folded flat and you will need to follow the instructions to set it up. Easy to do.

You must have patience with this trap. I placed a piece of piece of scrap plywood on the ground and baited it with cracked corn. Once the sparrows readily used that spot (it took about a week) I placed the trap on the wood. Within hours I had 12 sparrows captured. Works best in spring and fall.
